Nigerian Idol has done a total overhaul of their judges for the fourth season of the reality show, replacing them with three new faces.
The show has rested pioneer judges Yinka Davies and Jeffery Daniels along with season three judge Femi Kuti and replaced them with the trio of Afrobeat performer Dede Mabiaku, R&B singer Darey Art Alade and international conscious singer Nneka.
Producers of the show Optima Media Group led by C.E.O Rotimi Pedro unveiled the new judges on Wednesday February 25, 2014 at Rhapsody Lounge in Victoria Island, Lagos.
‘The last three seasons of the show
garnered enormous viewership, especially with the youth demographic,
more than any other music reality show – re-emphasizing the power of the
Idol brand across the globe’, Pedro said.
Dede Mabiaku isn’t new to judging at reality shows; the Afrobeat performer was also a judge on West African Idols back in 2007. Other judges on that show were Ghana’s Abrewa Nana and OAP Dan Foster.
Darey, a Project Fame reality TV show alumnus himself also hosted the now defunct Naija Sings.
Other Past judges at NI include Chocolate City boss Audu Maikori and Charly Boy.
reliableSources said the new judges were
selected from a wide pool of considerations, with the main criteria
being ability to recognise raw talent, interest in mentoring, as well as
a firm background in Nigerian music.
The grand prize is N7.5 million, a
Galaxy Tab, a Blackberry, an iPod and a brand new SUV car. The first
runner up gets N1.5 million, a Galaxy Tab, Blackberry and iPod; and the
